PLANT-BASED JUNK FOODS LINKED TO HEART DISEASE, EARLY DEATH

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - Switching to a plant-based diet may not always be as healthy as you think. The kind of plant-based foods you’re putting on your plate could be undermining your efforts.

Plant-based foods have been touted as a way to live longer and reduce your risk for chronic diseases, but a recent study published in a Lancet journal says ultra-processed plant-based foods are now linked to heart disease and early death.

Some examples are mac and cheese, veggie pizza, and frozen meals.

European researchers looked at data from more than 100,000 people who answered questions about their diet. That information was later tied to hospital and mortality records.

The research found plant-based junk foods dramatically raised bad cholesterol and high blood pressure and increased the risk of heart disease and early death.

The authors of this study say this is the first to link ultra-processed plant-based foods with increased risk for heart disease.

Switching to a plant-based diet can still be good for your health, but experts stress it’s important to choose fresh, minimally processed options.
