THIS SMALL TOWN WAS NAMED THE BEST PLACE TO RETIRE IN NEW JERSEY FOR ITS LOW COST OF LIVING AND AFFORDABLE HOUSING — AND IT'S CLOSE TO THE BEACH, TOO

This historic community is surrounded by parks and is just 20 miles away from the coast.

Americans are on the move post-retirement. According to a 2023 study, over 338,000 seniors relocated after they left the workforce, an increase of 44 percent compared to 2022. And while New Jersey may not have Florida’s weather, the Garden State has much to offer to those 65 and over, especially if you are looking for a quaint and affordable place to spend your golden years with plenty of outdoor recreation and a large senior population.

GoBankingRates.com recently released a report on the best places to retire in each state, and the small historic town of Mays Landing took the top spot in New Jersey.

The company estimates that the average monthly total cost of living there is $1,828, and the average monthly mortgage cost is $1,978, about $200 less than the national average. For those interested in buying a home post-retirement, GoBankingRates.com also reports that the average single-family home in Mays Landing is $332,000.

This town of just 6,000 is in Atlantic County, just a half-hour drive from Atlantic City’s boardwalk and gorgeous beaches. It also sits on the banks of the Great Egg Harbor River, which provides excellent opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and bird-watching. Lake Lenape Park spans 2,000 acres of lush landscapes surrounding a 344-acre lake, partly located in Mays Landing, with many recreational facilities such as a baseball field, walkways, picnic tables, and a volleyball court. Additionally, there are three public golf courses in the area if you prefer to work on your swing.

Downtown Mays Landing is known for its small family-owned shops and restaurants housed in historic buildings. But if you crave to spend a more lively weekend, Philadelphia is less than an hour away, and Baltimore is a little over two hours.

What makes this small town a perfect retirement spot is the community, as over a fifth of its population is aged 65 and over. Plus, the area is home to several assisted living and retirement facilities where seniors can stay active and socialize together.

To determine the best and worst retirement communities in each state, GoBankingRates.com looked at population statistics, mortgage costs, real estate value, and cost of living, as well as poverty rates among those 65 and over.
