Yesterday, I got dressed and semi grunted when I realized just how cold it was. Yes, I’m annoyed about the rigid temperatures and bone-chilling wind because my rosacea-prone skin just doesn't thrive in those conditions, but also because I’m kind of getting sick of wearing my outerwear—or, more so sick of the fact that my outerwear engulfs my entire outfits underneath. Spring, are you here yet?
Don’t get me wrong: I love outerwear, but I think I have more of a thing with springtime toppers than winter ones, which is exactly why Carey Mulligan’s recent look caught my attention. It featured all the wardrobe staples you probably have on hand, plus the ‘It’ jacket of spring 2025 that you should bookmark right now—heck, you should buy it right now.
Out for a New York Fashion Week event, Mulligan, with her signature blonde bob and bangs, wore a simple outfit consisting of black, wide-leg trousers, a semi-sheer blue sweater, and that must-have outerwear: a supple suede jacket that’s spring 2025’s defining piece. Mark my words.

She rounded out her look with black heels and a stunning black bag that contrasted beautifully against her light-brown suede topper. And before you say, “but Eva, brown and black don’t go together,” I’d kindly direct you to Kate Middleton's latest look, in which she paired a deep chocolate brown with black. Mulligan’s brown suede is an even safer bet, as the light shade is the perfect complement to black.
Suede is nothing new; the luxe material has been in fashion’s eye for years, but in recent months, it’s reached another level of popularity. Suede hobo bags, suede boots, and, of course, suede jackets seem to be blowing up everywhere, and though winter put a brief pause on the latter (unless you were brave enough to brave the elements in the material!), I foresee them to be back with a vengeance in the next three months.
