THIS COSTA RICAN PENINSULA IS ONE OF ONLY 5 BLUE ZONES ON THE PLANET, HERE'S WHY PEOPLE THERE LIVE SO LONG

There are only five places on earth officially recognized as Blue Zones, regions where people live longer, healthier lives than almost anywhere else. One of them is a quiet peninsula on Costa Rica's northwestern coast, and after a decade of living in this country, I still think it's the most underrated place here.

I moved to Costa Rica from Northern Germany with my husband about ten years ago, and the difference in pace of life hit me almost immediately. People here seemed happy in a way that felt unhurried and real.

Meet the Nicoya Peninsula

The Nicoya Peninsula sits on the northwestern coast of Costa Rica, and it's where this whole Blue Zone story starts.

I don't live there myself, my husband's job keeps us in the city for now, but it's exactly where we'd go if we ever made the move to the coast.

We've visited often enough to completely fall for its remote, unhurried charm.

What a Blue Zone Actually Is

Researcher Dan Buettner coined the term after years of identifying regions where people live significantly longer, and more importantly, healthier, than average.

He found five of them worldwide: Sardinia (Italy), Okinawa (Japan), Loma Linda (California), Ikaria (Greece), and Nicoya, Costa Rica.

What's interesting is that these communities, spread across totally different continents, share almost identical lifestyle habits.

Why Nicoya Specifically?

A few things set it apart:

  • The water is mineral-rich, naturally high in calcium, which researchers believe helps Nicoyans stay physically strong well into old age.
  • Family is everything. Most people never move far from where they were born, and multi-generational households are the norm rather than the exception.
  • Movement happens naturally, not through gym workouts, but through walking to a neighbor's house, tending a garden, or fishing.
🚗 Quick tip while you're reading: Nicoya is remote enough that having your own car makes a real difference in how much of it you actually get to see. Adobe Rent a Car is who we use ourselves, insurance included up front, no surprise fees, and 10% off through us.

The Nicoyan Diet Isn't Complicated

A typical Nicoyan breakfast is gallo pinto (black beans and rice) with eggs, a fresh corn tortilla, and coffee. That's the whole thing, and it's delicious. We've got a full roundup of must-try foods across Costa Rica if you want to try more of it before you land.

The staples are black beans, plantains, papaya, yams, squash, and locally caught fish like tuna and red snapper, all local, unprocessed, and grown nearby. It's part of why heart disease rates here are so low.

Buettner's "Power of Nine"

These are the nine habits Buettner found across every Blue Zone:

  1. Natural daily movement
  2. A strong sense of purpose
  3. Low chronic stress
  4. Eating until about 80% full
  5. Mostly plant-based diet
  6. Moderate wine/alcohol
  7. Spiritual or community involvement
  8. Strong family bonds
  9. An active social life

Researchers estimate only about 30% of longevity comes down to genetics. The other 70% is lifestyle, which means most of us have far more control over this than we think.

What a Decade Here Has Taught Me

Ten years in Costa Rica has completely changed how I think about stress, meals, and relationships. Even living in the city, the Pura Vida mindset works its way into daily life whether you plan for it or not.

I can only imagine how much more amplified that feeling is in Nicoya itself. Nobody there read a wellness book to figure this out. They just lived, and somehow that was the whole secret.

If you're planning a visit, Montezuma and Santa Teresa are our favorite entry points into the region, and honestly two of our favorite towns in the whole country. For the full Blue Zone experience though, pick a smaller village, book a stay through Vrbo, and slow all the way down.
